On Nov. 9th and 10th, the 159th Geo-Forum of the School of Geosciences was held in the conference room of 757, building C. ProfessorShahin Dashtgard, from Simon Fraser University, gave a series of lectures about the unconventional hydrocarbons systems in Canada to the graduate students from school of Geosciences.

On the 9th, professor Dashtgard introduced the geological characteristics of the Canadian oil sand the procedures to recover this type of high viscosity oil. On the following day, the geological background and the hydrocarbons enrichment of the major shale gas and tight oil plays in Canada were discussed. After each lecture, many questions from the students were raised, including the comparison between Canadian shale gas and the Chinese shale gas and the environmental concerns regarding the unconventional hydrocarbon development, and professor Dashtgard responded enthusiastically and in great detail. The excellent interactions between the students and the lecturer enhanced the quality of the course to a great extent.

Dr Shahin Dashtgard got his PhD degree from the University of Alberta. Before becoming a professor at the Simon Fraser University, he worked for a number of oil companies, including PanCanadian Petroleum, Imperial Oil, Fletcher Challenge Energy Canada, and Talisman Energy Inc. His research is focused in two subject areas: 1) resolving depositional cyclicty and evolution of convergent-margin basins (CMBs); and, 2) evaluating fluvio-tidal strata through time and space. He received the W. W. Hutchison Medal, which is awarded by the Geological Association of Canada to a young individual for recent exceptional advances in Canadian earth science research, in 2020.
