Recently, the result of 2024 AAPG Imperial Barrel Award (IBA) competition was announced, a postgraduate team from School of Geosciences achieved the second place in the Asia-Pacific region, the highest position of all China university team in this year's event and the best record in the participation history of China University of Petroleum (East China).
Guided by Professor Zhang Shiqi, Yomi Gaius and Zhang Yaxuan, the team was composed of Gao Qianziyi, Zhang Zhaochen, Lv Shuwen, Wu Ziquan, and Liu Yanxian. Faced the challenge of tight schedule and heavy tasks, all members worked hardly to prepare the team task during the whole winter holiday. Based on the geological data provided by the competition committee, combined with their geological knowledge, competition experience, literature review and actively discussion, the team finally delivered the analysis report with the title of “Australia's Merrimelia region, a high-potential natural gas exploration zone”, which received the highly appraisal from the committees.
Imperial Barrel Award,the AAPG-sponsored global competition, are open to all postgraduates majoring of Geology, Geophysics, petroleum engineering from the world. Participants must analyze the geological or geophysical data of certain oil and gas area provided by organizer and deliver professional technical proposals on the oil and gas exploration prospects within strict timelines. This competition receives the participation of more than 300 university teams from more than 80 countries of the world.
