Recently, the State Intellectual Property Office announced the list of the 25th China Patent Award, and one invention patent of Professor Su Yuanda and Professor Tang Xiaoming, "Optimization Design Method for Variable Diameter Acoustic Soundproofing Body of Drill Collar during Drilling Acoustic Logging," won the China Patent Excellence Award.
The patent "An Optimizing design of Acoustic Logging While Drilling Isolator for Variable Diameter Drill Collar " (Patent No. ZL201310328974.8) has invented a simple, practical, and effective optimized Acoustic Logging While Drilling Isolator for Variable Diameter Drill Collar that does not require grooves on the drill collar. The core technical indicators have achieved breakthroughs, with a 38% increase in sound insulation, 1.8 times increase in instrument mechanical strength, and a cost reduction of more than half. The new variable diameter sound isolator can achieve the goal of increasing mechanical strength, attenuating direct wave interference from drill collars, reducing instrument processing and maintenance costs. This patented technology has been successfully applied to the three major domestic oil companies, including the South China Sea, Bohai Sea, Iraq, Indonesia and other places abroad, and acquired significant social and economic benefits. It has also become an essential tool for precise exploration and efficient development of deep-sea and deep oil and gas fields.
Held for 25 years, the China Patent Award, co-sponsored by the China National Intellectual Property Administration and the World Intellectual Property Organization, aims to commend the patentee and inventor (designer) who have actively and effectively carried out the creation, application, protection and management of intellectual property rights and made outstanding contributions to promoting innovation and accelerating economic and social development. In 2025, 30 China Patent Gold Awards and 10 China Design Gold Awards, 60 Chinese Patent Silver Awards and 15 Chinese Design Silver Awards, 607 Chinese Patent Excellence Awards, 47 Chinese Design Excellence Awards, 8 the Best Organization Award, 19 the Excellent Organization Award, and 12 the Best Recommendation Award, were selected.
Professor Su Yuanda, doctoral supervisor, recipient of Shandong Youth Science and Technology Award, Fu Chengyi Youth Science and Technology Award, and China Petroleum and Chemical Industry Federation Youth Outstanding Contribution Award. He serves as the Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Well Geophysics Special Committee of the Chinese Geophysical Society. He has been the leader of 15 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the National Key Research and Development Program, the Strategic Leading Special Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Major Science and Technology Special Project of PetroChina. He has received 5 first prizes (3 as the first author) and 2 second prizes in provincial and ministerial level and published over 80 SCI papers in journals such as Geophysics, 18 authorized invention patents and 10 software copyrights.
Professor Tang Xiaoming, a nationally excellent expert and internationally renowned acoustic logging expert, recipient of the Outstanding Technological Achievement Award from the International Society of Rock Physics and Logging Analysts (SPWLA), Baker Hughes Special Contribution Award and SPWLA Best Paper Award. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in the United States and previously served as the Chief Scientist of Baker Hughes Energy Company. As the organizing committee for the Symposium on Integrated Applications of Seismic and Logging Data organized by the Society of Exploration Geophysics (SEG) in the United States, a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the International Logging Association (SPWLA), and an editorial board member for Applied Geophysics, he current served as the director of the Deep Oil and Gas Exploration Technology and Equipment Engineering Research Center of the Ministry of Education and the Shandong Geophysical Logging Engineering Center. He has authorized over 30 US patents, 15 Chinese invention patents and published 1 research monograph, 2 translated books, and more than 160 papers, and won, etc.
